They weren't a midrange driver, but voice range. There's a difference.

You can find KS-14704's that are identical to the 720A, and rarely you can find early versions with a threaded snout.

I suspect the original may be flatter, but the Altec versions had a sizable peak at 2k that makes them unsuitable for Hi-fi. Sizable as in maybe 12 DB.
